At first I was confused about what was going on and what was happening, but once I started putting everything together the book began to make more sense. I think it's an excellent novel; truly a masterpiece.

one of the best books of all time.It rates right alongside timeless classics such as the brothers karamazov, east of eden invisible man.A perpetual stuggle of a black youth named johnny growing up in the slums of New York amidst poverty and racism.Forced to succumb to christianity but in his heart he really is rebelling against an alien religion that is foreign as the country on a globe. His inner family he tries to find a meaning to everything he is going through. His brother Roy is a rebel by nature, his father is a domineering tyrant, and his mother just accepts life.Baldwin was a writer that compelled you to look in the mirror even if the reflection happened to be hypocritical.A honest, intelligent literary genius.
