generally i think the ABFF should be a place to help cultivate the images of black
cinema, to network and to have fun while doing so. well, i think this year the festival
fell short of the mark. one disappointment was the theme of the majority of the films.
there was a criminal element to nearly every film screened at the festival, from the
gangsta themed "blue hill avenue" to the prison drama (oh drama)
"lockdown" to the momma drama "stranger inside" and even my favorite
tale of theivery "lift" i felt as if i was watching an extended version of
"law and order" meets "oz" or something. i just wanted a little more
variety but after the screening of the short films on opening night, which i enjoyed for
their diversity and quality, there were a lot of images of black people in handcuffs, or
prison garb, talking through the glass or the bars, sitting with lawyers or yelling out
multi-digit numbers. clearly that is part of the black reality but not the only part i
want to see on screen in the name of "keepin' it real". i expect better of the
festival i had come to know in two earlier visits. don't get me wrong, i applaud the
filmmakers for having the vision, getting the financing and producing the films but i
thought the hoodsploitation era was over. apparently not.

THE ABFF WAS GIVEN FOUR STARS BECAUSE NOTHING IS PERFECT AND EVERYTHING HAS ROOM FOR
IMPROVEMENT. THIS WAS MY FIRST YEAR THERE AND I WAS VERY IMPRESSED. I WAS A LITTLE
DISTURBED READING SOME OF YOUR COMMENTS, BUT THEN AGAIN IT TOOK ME BACK TO THE FESTIVAL TO
REEVALUATE SOME THINGS. THE AWARDS CEREMONY WAS HOSTED UNPROFESSIONALLY BY NAME FORGETING
AND THE HOSTS'ATTIRE AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. YES, I AGREE, BABY BOY NEEDS TO GROW UP AND
BE A MAN. I WISH I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THE PREVIOUS YEARS EVENTS IN ORDER TO
COMPARE THIS YEAR'S. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INSIGHT WHICH HAS IN TURN CAUSED ME REALLY THINK
ABOUT WHAT THE FESTIVAL REALLY IS AND WHAT IT SHOULD BE. HAVE YOU SENT YOUR COMMENTS TO
THE CREATORS? THEY SHOULD ALSO ALLOW ATTENDEES TO GIVE SOME SORT OF FEEDBACK BY MAIL OR
PHONE LIKE LINCOLN DOES. LINCOLN SENT ME A VIDEO OF PAST SHORT FILMS JUST FOR ANSWERING A
SURVEY ABOUT LINCOLN'S SPONSORSHIP TO THE FESTIVAL. PLEASE WRITE ME AGAIN, I VERY MUCH
ENJOYED READING YOUR COMMENTS. BC

YOU ARE THE WOMAN!!! Although I wasn't there, I heard nothing positive about ABFF's 5th
year of festivities! Thank you for being true to your craft, your audience, and
yourself... I can only hope that more folks step up to the plate & SPEAK OUT, not
condescendingly, but straight up and truthfully... Here's hoping that Jeff is man enough
to take the bumps & the bruises, embrace the truth, and save his branded brainchild
from drowning in its own sea of !#%%... keep on my sistah... I admire how you not only
pointed out the flaws, but offered impeccable solutions... if the ABFF team has half a
brain, they'd want to hire you as a consultant to show them how to IMPLEMENT all that FREE
advice you gave them! let me know if they/he (Jeff) dares to contact you (smile)! thanks
again for "keepin' it real for real!"

I DID NOT ATTEND THE ABFF 2001 FESTIVAL. I DID ATTEND THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD YEAR
...YOUR ARTICLE CONFIRMS WHY MY HUSBAND AND I STOPPED ATTENDING. THE FESTIVAL FORGOT WHAT
ITS MISSION WAS...I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH SEX, SUN, SAND BUT WANT NO PART IN SEPARATISM,
SINGLE-MINDEDNESS AND SEXISM. UNLESS IN PORTRAYED IN A GRIPPING FILM AND OPEN FOR
DISCUSSION AT THE ABFF AFTERWARDS.
